Our Founder

Visionary priest and social reformer, St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara lived in the 19th century, making significant contributions spreading across myriad fields such as education, media and social justice.

Born on 10th February 1805 at Kainakari, Kerala, he was the youngest son of Kuriakose Chavara and Mariam Toppil. It was his mother who introduced him to the mysteries of faith and the wonders of simple prayer.

Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was more than a spiritual leader of the Syro Malabar Catholic Community. He founded the congregation called the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate and fought for the appointment of local priests as Bishops instead of foreign missionaries and founded the first Catholic religious congregation for men and women in the country.

His passion for education led him to start the first school for weaker sections at Mannanam, Kerala in 1846. Later he made it his mission to see that every church erected a school in its vicinity catering specifically to the downtrodden classes of society.

Blessed Fr. Chavara departed for his heavenly abode in the year 1871.
